Afghanistan’s centuries old carpet industry has some of the most highly skilled weavers in the world. Hand-knotted carpets are Afghanistan’s largest legal export with over one million Afghans working directly or indirectly in the supply chain of this industry. Well into the 1980s, the patterns and quality of Afghan carpets were virtually unchanged from the previous century as Afghans had minimal exposure to outside influences. Afghans have maintained their traditions and continue to create carpets that are entirely handmade, from carding to spinning to weaving. Recently, however, Afghan carpets have become some of the most modern and versatile as they embrace contemporary designs and colors.
Afghan made Carpets and leading industry experts provide Afghans training on proper wool selection, spinning techniques, new coloration and design. Two state-of-the-art facilities in Mazar-e-Sharif and Herat have been established for the washing and finishing of carpets. All employees received expert training, making them capable of producing premium quality washes according to international standards. Afghans can now sell their finished products directly to international markets, rather than having their work finished, packaged, and sold by neighboring countries......more on next Blog post....
